Being one of the galactic superpowers, the NLR possesses an efficient military, known as the Lunar Defense Force. Though not nearly as large or experienced as the Solar Empire, the LDF are made up of Mares and Stallions absolutely dedicated to the preservation of their Republic and the safety of their friends and families. All of them volunteers, as conscription is illegal in the Republic, except in the most dire of circumstances that must be unanimously agreed upon by the House of Commons, the Colonial Senate, and the Consul Herself. Throughout the Republic's history of warfare, conscription has only been legalized three times.

The LDF is divided into four branches, the Militia Leagues, the Lunar Watch, the Marine corps, and the Navy. The Militia Leagues are the defense forces of worlds part of the Republic that are funded and supplied by the LDF, they serve as the first line of defense for the Republic world should it come under attack and are trained to use Guerilla tactics and their environments to the best of their abilities.

Arguably the most important branch of the LDF, the Lunar Watch mainly observes all the Republic's neighbouring factions, particularly those associated or known to be associated with the Solar Empire, keeping an eye out for any possible attacks. Without the constant alertness of the Lunar Watch, the NLR would've been conquered long ago.

The Marine Corps of the LDF is the smallest branch, but no less important. Marine squads are considered to be commandos, given the most dangerous but important missions and armed with deadly powersuits, each one containing enough firepower to devastate a platoon of Solar Knights, combine that with the skills and coordination of a squad of four or five Marines, and they face entire armies. They constantly find themselves outnumbered on their missions, but they more then make up for it.

Widely considered the deadliest force in the Republic, the Lunar Navy is the single most advanced space navy in the entire galaxy, only the vast Solar Armada can compete with the might of the Fleets. Armed with strong armour, powerful energy shields, and a vast array of beam weapons that can pierce all but the toughest shields and armour, the ships of the Lunar Navy excel at hit and run strikes, stealth systems prevent their heat signatures from showing up, allowing them to easily penetrate deep into enemy territory and wreak all kinds of havoc. In ship-to-ship combat, their beam weapons allow them to strike at a target's most vulnerable point with terrifying accuracy,  powered by the alien energy source known only as Naltium, Lunar ships can get in and out before a significant and coordinated force can launch a counterattack.

When war is determined to be the only option, the NLR does not bother alerting their enemies by declaring war, rather by striking a deadly attack on their foe's most important assets, crippling them and defeating their forces before they ever have a chance to attack the Republic itself. When the Lunar Watch finds sufficient evidence that a faction is about to declare war on the Republic and launch an attack, the LDF mobilizes one of their Fleets to prepare an assault. Utilizing their stealth systems, the fleet drifts silently into enemy territory, only showing themselves when they are near their targets. Striking at drydocks, supply stations, and gathering enemy fleets not on alert, their attacks quickly throw their opponents into disarray and panic. Sometimes, a Lunar ship will deploy a squad of marines on an enemy world to add further panic. The end result is usually a devastated, demoralized enemy still trying to figure out what the hay just happened, usually they accept the Republic's demand of surrender and pay whatever price the Republic demands from them. If they don't, further raids could continue for months at a time, always making sure their enemies can't establish as much of a military presence as before.
